Forward Deployment Pulse
The clearest public, high-frequency proxy for the shift from AI capability to AI operation is a job title. FDP counts forward-deployed engineering roles across the AI value chain — daily, from the companies' own public job boards. Vendors staff FDEs before the revenue shows: it is the supply-side complement to the eight demand pulses.

IBM commits 8,000 forward-deployed engineers — announced on its Q2 2026 earnings call, the largest single FDE commitment on record, made in the same quarter IBM reported mainframe revenue down 42% and record distributed-infrastructure growth: the deployer bets its future on installing AI inside client enterprises. The daily count above tracks six AI-native vendors; the incumbents' commitments run beside it as watermarks — ServiceNow–Accenture program (May), DXC "tens of thousands" partner-certified (11 Jun), AWS $1 billion organization (30 Jun), now IBM 8,000 (22 Jul).
Why FDE hiring leads
A forward-deployed engineer works inside the customer's operating environment — the human bridge between what a model can do and what an enterprise actually runs. Companies build FDE organizations when customers demand systems that must work in production, not when they are experimenting: no serious agentic uptake without deployment complexity, no deployment complexity without embedded engineering. When the frontier labs, the data platforms and the agentic-infrastructure vendors all expand forward-deployed hiring at once, the market is moving from the capex phase (measured in GPUs and data centres — our Rubin Build-Out) to the opex phase (measured in deployment capacity — our Agentic Ecosystem and Agentic Winners).
The bearish read matters too: a rising FDE count with weak product reuse means the business scales like consulting, not software. FDP is therefore read WITH the demand pulses — vendor staffing on this page, market-priced demand on the family hub, and actual business spend in the Ramp cross-check. Method: role titles matching forward-deployed patterns (core) plus deployment-engineering, applied-AI and customer-engineering roles (broad), counted daily from the public Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby boards of six value-chain companies. No scraping, no estimates — the companies' own postings. Deltas accrue as history builds. Research diary, not investment advice.
The full framework behind this pulse — what the role actually is, the nine metrics we track, the bull and bear reads, and why labs, hyperscalers, platforms and IT-services firms all converged on the model within four months — is in the strategy paper: Forward-Deployed Engineers — the human infrastructure layer of agentic AI.
