The Midday 10
The Midday 10 · 12:30 ET · 2026-07-27
The handoff stopped being a thesis today and became a tape. The semiconductor complex is being sold across the board — AMD down more than seven percent, Micron near five, Nvidia itself down four and a half — while the software layer that gets paid for using the compute is having one of its best sessions of the year: SAP up 7.4%, Samsara up seven, Salesforce up six, ServiceNow up six, Palantir up five. Information Technology is down 1.6% as a sector while Communication Services is up nearly two, and the split runs straight through the middle of what most people still call one trade. Underneath it sits the detail that turned the morning: Nvidia is helping fund OpenAI's data-centre build, which means the largest supplier in the complex is now financing its own customer's demand. Oil, meanwhile, has kept falling — the vote this morning's letter said the curve had already cast. The tape at midday, in ten.

LEVEL The handoff, in a single session
Information Technology is down 1.64% while Communication Services is up 1.87% — and inside tech the split is starker still: the software fund is up 3.57% and the cloud fund up 3.19% — CLOU back at 24, testing the breakout it has failed once already, against the broad semiconductor fund down 4.05%. That is a spread of more than seven points between the two halves of the AI trade in one session. This is the capex-to-opex handoff the Weekly has been scoring for three weeks, printing in daylight rather than in a ratio.

DOWN Nvidia — the supplier is now the lender
NVDA trades down 4.43%, and the reason is not demand — it is who is paying for it. Nvidia helping finance OpenAI's data-centre build-out means the largest supplier in the complex is underwriting its own customer's orders. That is vendor financing, and it is a named rung on our own AI Credit Stress Tape: revenue that returns to the seller as a receivable rather than as cash from an independently funded buyer. The market repriced it within a session.

DOWN AMD leads the complex down
AMD is the worst of the majors at −7.39%, ahead of Micron at −4.89% and Nvidia at −4.43%. Intel adds another 3.50% to Friday's 7.89% loss, so the best print of the season is now roughly a fifth below the after-hours high it made on Thursday night. The structural line has moved with it: the broad semiconductor fund is trading near 502, back at last week's washout low around 498.5 — the 530–532 band that framed the whole debate is now twenty-five points overhead.
